Mark William Calaway, better known by his ring name The Undertaker, is an American professional wrestler currently signed to WWE as a free agent. Regarded as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, He began his wrestling career in 1984 working under various gimmicks for World Class Championship Wrestling (WCCW) and other affiliate promotions. After signing for World Championship Wrestling (WCW) in 1989 he enjoyed a brief stint as a mid-card performer known as “Mean Mark” Callous before joining The World Wrestling Federation (WWF now WWE) in 1990.
In WWE Calaway was rebranded as “The Undertaker” and gained significant mainstream popularity as a horror themed, macabre entity who employed scare tactics and held links to the supernatural. He became one of the most prominent figures of the Attitude Era, featuring in various pivotal storylines and matches as WWF sustained a boom period in the late 90’s. His character transitioned into a biker in the early 2000’s before returning to a refined version of his previous gimmick in 2004. The Undertaker is known for The Streak, a series of 21 victories at WWE’s flagship event WrestleMania.
He has held 17 championships, within WWF/WWE he is a four time champion, three time World Heavyweight Champion, six time WWF World Tag Team Champion, one time WCW Tag Team Champion and a one time WWF Hardcore Champion. Outside of the WWE he is a one time USWA United World Heavyweight Champion and a one time WCWA Texas Hardcore Champion. He has headlined numerous Pay-Per-View (PPV) events for WWE including four WrestleMania’s (13, XXIV, XXVI and 33). According to WWE he has 101 WWE PPV victories which is more than any other WWE wrestler ever. In 2013 The Undertaker was voted the greatest WWE wrestler ever in a Digital Spy poll. In naming him the second greatest wrestler ever, IGN described him as “one of the most respected wrestlers and characters in the business, treated with actual reverence. Like a cherished, invaluable artefact.” Calaway has also appeared as Hutch in the 1992 film Suburban Commando.
He also had guest appearances on Poltergeist: The Legacy and Celebrity Deathmatch. He is a fan of Boxing and Mixed Martial Arts and has practiced in Brazillian Jiu-Jitsu and earned a black belt in 2011 under Rolles Gracie Jr.His striking gloves and Hell’s Gate submission were also inspired by mixed martial arts.
